Learn why your yoga mat towel slips and how to stop it. Simple fixes for better grip during hot yoga or any practice.
Quick answer
To stop your yoga mat towel from sliding, wet it thoroughly before class, use a grippy mat underneath, or switch to a towel with a silicone backing.
Why your towel slips (and why it matters)
A slipping towel is distracting and can break your focus or even cause a misstep. The main reasons are a dry microfiber towel (it needs moisture to grip), a smooth mat surface, or a towel that is too small for your mat. Understanding the cause helps you choose the right fix.
When simple fixes aren't enough
If you've tried wetting the towel and using a grippy mat but still slide, consider that your towel may lack a non-slip backing. Some towels, like microfiber ones, rely on moisture alone. For persistent slipping, a towel with silicone corner strips or a full silicone backing offers a more reliable hold.
Diagnose and fix your slipping towel
- Symptom: Your towel slides around on the mat during poses like downward dog or standing balances.
- Likely cause: The towel is dry (microfiber needs moisture to grip) or the mat surface is too smooth for the towel's backing.
- Corrective action: Spray or run the towel under water until damp, then wring out excess. Place it on a mat with a textured or sticky surface. If using a studio mat, try a towel with silicone corner grips. If the towel still slides after wetting it, your mat may be too slick. Consider a mat with a natural rubber or PVC-free sticky surface.
- When to choose another option: If you've tried wetting and a grippy mat but the towel won't stay put, look for a towel with a full silicone backing. This provides the most secure hold for high-sweat classes.
